Research News
A key paper on the genetic epidemiology of the New York outbreak, a Japanese study of the impact of being indoors on disease spread, and a reminder that the full impact of the pandemic includes cases of other disease that were not adequately treated.
- A key study of the genetic epidemiology of the virus in New York** demonstrates that the majority of the observed strains arrived from Europe and lays the groundwork for studying the spread of the disease and the impact of interventions going forwards.
- A Japanese study of secondary spread** found that transmission was 19 times more likely to occur in a closed (indoor) environment than in an outdoor setting. This could be important as temperatures warm.
- A drop in coronary artery disease admissions in Austria when compared to the same period from last year suggests that there may be a significant toll from diverting or delaying treatment of cases, particular cardiac and cancer cases, during the pandemic. This impact should be included in any estimate of the impact of the pandemic.d
