Antibody Epidemiology in LA LA Land A study has concluding that 4.1% of people in Los Angeles have antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 is noteworthy, but, among the epidemiological community, the response involves more consternation than fascination. The problem is that, despite the headlines, the authors have not published anything that could be called a study. They put out a press release with a result and no way to evaluate it..
Research News
Two studies demonstrate the importance of mild and asymptomatic disease, a German study introduces tools to study cellular immunity, a theory about TB vaccination is debunked, Israeli researchers propose using the virus to create herd immunity, and a review of internet websites demonstrates their lack or reliability early in the pandemic.
- A clinical study of 26 asymptomatic cases demonstrates that the CT changes in the lungs can be found even in asymptomatic patients and that viral carriage can last as long as 36 days.
- The potential for spread from asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic cases is demonstrated in a three family cluster, in which 8 of 15 members were infected, three had mild or no symptoms, but two of the three managed to transmit the disease to family members. Taken together, these two papers demonstrate the role of asymptomatic carriage in the spread of the disease and the challenge it poses for controlling the pandemic.
- German researchers offer a first detailed look at cellular immunity and provide tools for large scale testing, which will be essential in developing our understanding and assessment of immunity beyond simple antibody testing.
- A detailed look at the possibility that BCG vaccination (a vaccination for tuberculosis) might protect agains Covid-19 takes advantage of the fact that the year in which mandatory BCG vaccination was introduced in different countries creates a natural comparison group within each of those countries between age cohorts covered and not covered by requirements. The resulting analysis does not support the hypothesis, derived from more simplistic models, that it is protective against Covid-19.
- Israeli researchers consider the implications of a proposal that amounts, in essence, to using the active virus to vaccinate low risk populations and conclude that it would decrease overall mortality by 43% because it would help spare high risk populations.
- A review of websites providing information during the early stages of the epidemic found that, by one benchmark, 70% had a low score and none had a high score.
