Asymptomatic Is Not the Same as Unaffected This disease didn't even exist six months ago, so it is absurd to think we understand all of the ways it can harm us. We must allow for the possibility that, in this case, what doesn't kill you makes you weaker.
Research News
A study of the secondary attack rates for COVID-19 using detailed contact tracing for nine cases found two secondary infections out of 159 close contacts. Both cases were spouses of the nine known cases. The secondary attack rate among household members was 13%. These results would imply either that the disease is not as contagious as suggested by some recent seroprevalence studies or that the respiratory samples used in this study were missing some portion of asymptomatic cases.
An evaluation of SARS-CoV-2 antibody tests from Abbot Labs demonstrated a specificity of 99.90% and, at 17 days after first positive RT-PCR test for the virus, a sensitivity of 100% based on 1,020 serum samples. A separate analysis in Boise Idaho found that, among people who actively registered for testing, 1.79% had antibodies. This is likely to represent an upper boundary for zero-prevalence, given that those volunteering to be tested are more likely to have concerns about exposure.
An estimation of the negative psychosocial consequences of home isolation orders based purely on modeling, concluded that suicides, divorces, family violence, depression, and alcohol abuse would result in a the loss of 1,757,498 years of life in Switzerland if the stay at home orders are maintained for three full months. There are no data to support this conclusion, but it is important to consider in evaluating the costs and benefits intervention strategies.
The dubious paper of the day award goes to a Chinese study arguing that the disease originated in Washington State based on sequencing of viral isolates and was brought from there to China.
