A risk assessment likely to get substantial attention** compares the risk of death from COVID-19 to the risk from dying in a traffic fatality. Although this sort of risk comparison is important and valuable as we make difficult decisions about ending strict social distancing, the study has two major limitations: 1) it considers death as the only negative consequence of the disease without considering the potential severe and prolonged nature of the disease and its sequelae among survivors, 2)it focuses exclusively on those under age 65, when they are the group least likely to die from the disease, a strange choice given the ease with which they could have included analyses for other age groups. The authors argue appropriately for increased protection for older people, but part of the reason for reducing infection in younger age groups is specifically to protect more vulnerable groups.
A compilation of 50 studies on COVID-19 in pregnancy** found an 8% infection rate among infants of infected mothers and a 25% rate of preterm birth, suggesting pregnant women should exercise extreme caution, particularly in the third trimester of pregnancy.
A new approach to viral detection** based on droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) appears to be far more sensitive than RT-PCR and suggests that the virus is present longer than previously believed, a finding with important implications for quarantine protocols.
A simulation model compares** the relative effectiveness of a 1-layer (primary contacts only) and 2-layer (primary contacts and their primary contacts) quarantine and concludes that rapid detection (within one week) of cases might allow 1-layer quarantine, but slower detection will require 2-layer quarantine to prevent rapid growth of the outbreak.
A report from Bergamo Italy chronicles the toll of the outbreak on health care providers including the deaths of 19 physicians and suggests that an urgent, region-wide lockdown would have been necessary early in the epidemic to prevent the devastation that the city endured.
An analysis of air pollution and COVID-19** in the Netherlands finds a strong association between fine airborne particles and both disease incidence and related hospital admissions. The authors suggest that air pollution levels should be considered in mitigation strategies for the disease.
