Deaths in New York City between March 11 and May 20, 2020 exceeded the historical average for that period by 24,172. Of those excess deaths, 5,293 could not be accounted for by COVID-19, suggesting that the disease contributed to many deaths above and beyond those directly attributable to SARS-CoV-2.
Of six approved, RT-PCR test kits for SARS-CoV-2, only three (Life River, Huada, and Sansure) provided acceptable sensitivity down to 242 RNA copies/mL. Two (DAAN and BioGerm) failed at that level. One (GeneoDx) failed at 1936 copies/mL. This wide range in sensitivity demands that care be taken in conducting and interpreting test results.
In one of the few studies that tested an entire sample without providing an opportunity to opt out, all patients at an Australian pediatric emergency department between March 21 and April 19 were tested for SARS-CoV-2. , Of those children, 0.9% tested positive. This would be the high end for the infection rate among children in the general population, since it is reasonable to presume that there is a higher rate among children with an illness than without.
A CDC assessment of programs to screen international travelers during the early stages of the pandemic (prior to March 17) concludes that the were ineffective because of the high numbers of presymptomatic and asymptomatic cases.
A single presymptomatic carrier at a conference in Munich infected 11 of 13 participants through handshaking and face-to-face contact.
A Dutch and Chinese team argues that the long asymptomatic prodrome among infectious cases will make it impossible to control the disease in the US, predicting 1.7 million cases by August. Presumably, far more aggressive testing and contact tracing will be necessary to control the disease.
Among states that provide racial and ethnic breakdowns on their COVID-19 mortality data, Blacks had 3.57 times the death rates of Whites. This disparity may well be greater among states not providing data.
Reductions in mobility, as indicated in data from Apple Maps, predicted declines in COVID19 incidence and may serve as a useful leading indicator of increases in incidence going forward.
