Among patients admitted to University of Washington Hospitals from March 30 through April for surgeries or conditions presumed to be unrelated to SARS-COV-2, 0.9% tested positive for the virus. These results suggest the, during this time period in Seattle, there were low rates of asymptomatic viral infections in the community. These tests were performed on all patients, so they should provide a good representation of community prevalence of asymptomatic infection.
Migrants and asylum seekers in Mexico had elevated rates of COVID-19 compared to the Mexican population. The relative risk of disease could be as high as 6.12 depending on assumptions about the base population.
A single symptomatic index case at a choir rehearsal in Washington State infected between 32 and 52 out of 60 fellow choir members. This demonstrates airborne spread, the potential for an extreme super-spreader event, and the risk of prolonged large gatherings when there are infections in the community.
A study in the UK considered the underlying risk of death among the elderly and those with substantial comorbidity. They calculated the one year mortality rate for this group and concluded that there would be between 147,000 and 588,000 excess deaths in this population in the UK if no action were taken and that essentially all of these deaths would be eliminated if a full suppression is undertaken.
An alternativee to the conventional model for airborne spread proposes that air flow from a cough or sneeze contains a range of droplet sizes. The author concludes that risk assessment based on earlier models that presumed transport distance was inversely proportional to droplet size should be revisited.
