SUMMARY
- An analysis of T-cell response** in patients with mild symptoms suggests that past exposure to other coronaviruses may play an important role in limiting disease related to SARS-CoV-2. If so, it might help explain why children, with frequent exposure to coronaviruses and their parents (i.e., younger adults) are less affected by the disease.
- Conjunctivitis was a frequent symptom of COVID-19 in China and should be considered both as a suggestive symptom and indicative of a possible path of entry for the virus.
- Low platelet count was also frequently associated with COVID-19 in hospitalized cases and was a bad prognostic factor.
- The ACE2 receptor, a key target of SARS-CoV-2, is widely distributed in the brain** of mice and humans and suggests that there is a broad range of potential neurological effects from COVID-19.
- SARS-CoV-2 was isolated in the feces of 43% of patients studied and the virus from those samples was infectious in cell culture. This reinforces the notion that fecal oral spread is possible in this population.
- A pooled analysis of cases with clearly identified exposures to SARS-CoV-2 found a mean incubation period of 5.5 days with 95% of cases falling between 2.1 and 14.7 days. We can expect 1% of infections to have incubation periods beyond 14 days. (Note that this does not consider mildly symptomatic cases which might have longer incubation periods.)
- A study of anonymous Apple mobility data in Japan suggests that a change of only 11% in mobility might be sufficient to reduce R(t) below 1.0. If this is true, it implies that mask wearing and other behavioral changes may be far more important than limiting mobility to control spread of SARS-CoV-2.
- An analysis of case fatality rates (CFR) in local areas of Korea** found values ranging from 1.7% to 25.9%. A closer analysis concluded that these rates are heavily influenced by nursing home outbreaks and should be interpreted with caution.
