Memorial Day and the War on Science The victims in the War on Science are all around us. We must remember them and resolve never to let it happen again. Science is not a point of view, it is a determination to find the objective truth. Only its denial reveals a point of view and a determination to mislead on behalf of an agenda, regardless of the cost.
Research News
A study of the transcriptional response of cells infected by SARS-CoV-2 found that the virus appears to inhibit the initial cellular response, but elevates the subsequent inflammatory response. The unique immune response provoked by the virus helps to explain the relative absence of early symptoms as well as the severity of subsequent symptoms.
A scoring system for assessing COVID-19 vulnerability converts the subject age based on demographics and comorbidity to determine a risk adjusted age. A system such as this can be used to assess individualized worker risk and determine appropriate levels of protection.
In a quantitative review of studies of SARS-CoV-2 transmission, the authors conclude that the number of close, personal interactions is more important than proximity, particularly at meals (without masks). Masks substantially reduce risk in closed spaces such as elevators and trains. Most spreading events studied involved asymptomatic carriers.
A meta-analysis of key parameters related to transmission of SARS-CoV-2 estimated a secondary attack rate of 15.4% in household settings with rates that rose by a factor of 2.6 for symptomatic cases. The serial interval was estimated as 4.9 days and the asymptomatic infection rate was 26%. In other words, cases are infectious for almost 5 days without symptoms and contagiousness is increased with the arrival of symptoms.
A meta-analysis of asymptomatic infection rates found that only 6 of 270 potentially relevant studies were methodologically appropriate and those studies found that only 11% of cases were truly asymptomatic. These findings suggest that a small minority cases are truly asymptomatic, contradicting the widely held belief that >80% of cases have no symptoms.
A study of antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (S) found that even some subjects without exposure to the virus had high levels of anti-S antibodies and that these antibodies had cross-reactivity with other common pathogens. In other words, antibodies to other viruses may confer some level of immunity to COVID-19.
A study of readmission for COVID-19 in New York City found that 3.6% of patients returned for emergency care after discharge and 1.9% required readmission. The readmitted patients tended to have a shorter length of original stay and higher rates of hypertension. In general, readmission is rare for COVID-19.
