Wide Genetic Diversity of SARS-CoV-2 Within a Host Undercuts Prevailing Notion of Single Genome Infections A study from Oxford examined viral genotypes in individual hosts and found more variability within hosts than between hosts. That diversity is transmitted between hosts, fundamentally changing our understanding of the transmission of SARS-CoV-2.
SARS-CoV-2 Infects and Kills Cardiac Cells In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate that the virus infects cardiomyocytes, stops beating, and induces apoptosis. The direct infection of the heart muscle cells had not been previously demonstrated.
Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) from Lung Cells Can Infect Cardiac Cells A separate team from the US and China found that extracellular vesicles containing the SARS-CoV-2 genome could infect cardiomyoctes.
Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 Antibodies in Blood Donors and patients at the University Hospital in Zurich Between December and May, samples from 8,591 patients and 5,388 blood donors were tested. In May, seropositivity peaked at 36/2773 (1.3%) among patients and 27/2524 (1.1%) among blood donors. This was a meticulously conducted study with no chance for self selection bias. Given that the patient cohort was more likely to be ill and the blood donor was more likely to be healthy than the general population, the agreement between the cohorts is compelling,
Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 Antibodies in non-COVID-19 Pediatric Patients in Seattle Tests of 1,775 residual serum samples from 1,076 children who were patients at Seattle Children's hospital in March and April of 2020 found that IgG positive rates rose to a peak of 1.4% seropositivity. Note that 2 of the 10 seropositive children had been diagnosed with the disease. Because this did not require subjects to agree to participate, it is less prone to selection bias than other designs, although it does represent children who were ill and, as such, may overestimate prevalence.
Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 Antibodies Among Healthcare Workers in China Out of 797 health care workers in Wuhan with no symptoms of COVID-19, 4.4% (35) tested positive for antibodies. All wore full personal protective equipment.
Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 Antibodies Among Healthcare Workers at an Academic Hospital in New York City Out of 285 self referred health care workers (HCW's) at Mt Sinai Medical Center, 36% tested positive or weakly positive for IgG. Because these are self referred subjects, it is not a representative sample and should be interpreted with caution.
Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 Antibodies in Household Members of Essential Workers In a sample of 232 participants, "enriched with health care workers, including 30 known COVID-19 cases"in Chicago, 36% of the 202 subjects without a prior COVID-19 diagnosis were seropositive for IgG and 21/30 (70%) of the household members of the known cases were seropositive. NOTE: It is not at all clear from this study how the participants were selected, and whether or not all household members were tested. This cannot be considered a representative sample without further data and should be interpreted with caution.
SARS-CoV-2 Detected in the Breath of COVID-19 patients In a Chinese study, samples from 30 subjects, the virus was found in 17% of exhaled breathe condensates. Investigators estimated that those patients were exhaling between 1,000 and 100,000 copies of viral RNA per minute. Note that the description of methods in this paper is unclear so it is difficult to evaluate quality.
SARS-CoV-2 Detected in the Breath of COVID-19 patients awaiting discharge Another Chinese study found that 2 of 10 patient awaiting discharge with negative throat swabs for three days had the virus in their exhaled breath condensate at a concentration of 10,000 viral RNA copies per cubic meter, equivalent to 1400 copies per minute.
SARS-CoV-2 Detected in the Air and on Surfaces in Patient Rooms Sampling in multiple clinical settings in London hospitals involved with the care of COVID-19 patients found viral RNA in 11% of surface samples and in 39% of air samples, where it was measured at concentrations ranging from 10 to 1,000 viral genome copies per cubic meter. None of the samples produced culturable viruses.
SARS-CoV-2 testing in the Air and on Surfaces in non-Healthcare settings visited or inhabited by COVID-19 cases Sampling in a Singapore of places visited or occupied by two known cases found only 2/428 positive samples, one from the bedside wall and one from the bed handle of the a room stayed in by one of the cases.
SARS-CoV-2 testing in the Quarantine Households German researchers tested households of 21 COVID-19 cases in quarantine. Viral RNA was found in 0/15 air samples, 10/66 wastewater samples, 4/119 object samples. None of the positive samples could be cultured.
