What If There Is no Immunity? Two papers, released today as preprints, suggest we may need to consider a future in which we must learn to live with COVID-19.
Research News
Immunity to Other Strains of Coronavirus is Short-lived. A cohort study of ten otherwise healthy subjects found an average of 13.2 coronavirus infections over the course of 20.6 years average follow-up. Each infection involved one of 4 strains of coronavirus (not COVID-19). Individual subjects were infected as many as 12 times with the individual strains and reinfection with the same strain could occur in as little as 6 months. This raises serious concerns about the durability of immunity and the viability of a vaccine for COVID-19.
Mutations in SARS-CoV-2 Can Cause 3-fold Variation in Infectiousness A Japanese study found that different mutations in the spike protein of the virus can alter the ability of the virus to enter cells in culture by more than a factor of three suggesting that mutations may have a major impact on virulence.
Contact Tracing and Viral Genetics Suggest Low Doses of SARS-CoV-2 may be infectious. Investigators used the tools of viral genetics to analyze data from a contact tracing study of the first cases in Germany. By looking at the intrahost variants for the subgenomic fragments of RNA, the investigators identify infection by what originated as a minority sequence in the index case. In other words, the data indicate that a small fraction of the viruses present in the host may be responsible for the infection in the contact. From this, the authors conclude that a low dose viral exposure, perhaps from a fomites, could be responsible for several transmission episodes in this cluster.
SARS-CoV-2 in River Water in Ecuador Raises Possibility of Waterborne Spread Many studies have documented the virus in wastewater. This study from Quito finds the virus in river water and raises the possibility of waterborne spread of COVID-19 in low sanitation countries.
SARS-CoV-2 in Breastmilk Not Infectious A study of 18 women with COVID-19 found SARS-CoV-2 RNA in one sample of breastmilk, but the viral culture was negative. This suggests that breastmilk cannot transmit the virus.
Seroprevalence Studies in Wuhan Suggest Antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 many not be sustained. Seroprevalence studies from Wuhan found that 90% of COVID-19 patients and 4.0% of healthcare workers had antibodies to SARS-CoV-2. This suggests, particularly given the high rate of infections in healthcare workers, that antibody levels may not be sustained long term.
