Lockdown Dramatically Reduced Symptoms of All Infectious Diseases An Israeli online survey study of daily symptoms likely to be associated with infectious disease was filled out over 2 million times since March 14. On March 19, a national state of emergency was declared and citizens were forbidden to leave their homes unless absolutely necessary. Over the next month coughing, rhinorrhea or nasal congestion, and the total number of symptoms declined by 74%, 70%, and 84% respectively. The total number of symptoms rebounded by 31% following reopening on May 13th. These data suggest that the lockdown dramatically reduced the spread of all infectious diseases, not just COVID-19.
Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 far higher in Latinx Communities During Lockdown in San Francisco Latinx ethnicity, inability to shelter in place, frontline service work, unemployment, and income below 50k all increased risk of infection during the lockdown. Among those with current infections (PCR positive) during this period, 96% were Latinx. These stark differences demonstrate profound inequities in the impact of the disease and in the effectiveness of public health prevention measures. Future measures must consider ways to improve public health protection for this community.
Study highlights critical importance of ventilation in prevention of COVID19 A detailed analysis of the super spreading event at a choir rehearsal in Washington state provides convincing evidence that the virus spread through aerosols. A combination of crowding, the nature and duration of the activity, and inadequate ventilation created the setting for a devastating outbreak. These results highlight the critical role mass indoor gatherings play in spreading the disease.
Anti-phospholipid antibodies may play key role in severe cases of COVID-19 A University of Michigan team found anti-phospholipid auto-antibodies in half of all COVID-19 patients. These are associated with the presence of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETS), which are in turn associated with severe lung pathology. One of these, calprotectin, is also associated with elevated platelets, D-dimers, and neutrophil count, as well as decreased lung and renal function. Introduction of COVID-19 IgG to mice dramatically increased thrombus formation. In sum, many of the antibodies created in response to SARS-CoV-2 play a key role in disease severity.
Patterns of mutation in SARS-CoV-2 suggest nature and direction of evolutionary pressure An analysis of viral genomes from around the world finds that the ORF1ab and S proteins are the most frequent sites of mutations. Weak to strong binding mutations (likely to cause more severe disease) appear to be more common than strong to weak. These mutations raise concerns about the potential for the virus to escape control from a single vaccine.
Saliva increases viability of viruses on surfaces Studies with a virus similar to SARS-CoV-2 finds that viruses transmitted in saliva droplets onto surfaces remain viable far longer than those transmitted in water. This increases the likelihood that fomites and transmit the virus.
Danish Researchers identify new potential anti-viral A polyether ionophore compound, X-206, inhibited the replication of the virus with more an impact on the virus that was more than 500 times its impact on human cells in culture. The authors suggest this category of chemicals may have potent anti-viral capacity.

What if there's no immunity? Two papers, just released as preprints, suggest we may need to consider a future of coexistence with COVID-19.
