[NOTE: THIS REPLACES A PREVIOUS VERSION THAT HAD A GLITCH PREVENTING LINKS FROM WORKING. MY APOLOGIES.] Evidence of the need for rapid, strong social distancing, the key role of airline hubs, no particular advantage of N95 masks in general use, and the advantages of separate clinics for fever triage.
- A model developed based on German data suggests that strong social distancing is the only truly effective measure in preventing an explosive growth in case numbers and that a delay greater than 5 days in implementing the measure can have disastrous consequences.
- A Brazilian study demonstrates that level of connection to global transportation networks is a primary predictor of local severity of the pandemic with air transportation hubs being particularly vulnerable.
- A meta-analysis of studies of the effectiveness of masks concludes that N95 masks are no better than simple medical masks in protecting care givers involved in routine care for influenza patients. The authors' suggestion that, in response to the current pandemic, N95 masks be reserved for high risk procedures that create aerosols makes some sense, but that recommendation is not based on specific data.
- A report from China demonstrates that separate fever clinics reduce infection risks and are far more efficient in processing patients.
