PUBLISHED: Virus becomes undetectable before infection is over in some patients, frontline docs create better triage algorithms, and SARS-CoV2 reproduces far more rapidly than SARS-CoV. UNPUBLISHED: Daily screening of population samples may control outbreaks moving forward, transmission on Diamond Princess primarily through personal contact and fomites, and reducing Health Service spending associated with increased COVID-19 case-fatality-rate.
PEER REVIEWED
- A paper mentioned in a previous newsletter looking at positive PCR testing after repeat 24 hour negative tests suggests that levels of the virus may oscillate, particularly for those with less severe symptoms. This should not be taken to mean that the infection entirely disappeared and then re-emerged as some media reports have suggested.
- Triage protocols for Covid-19 developed independently by staff in a Singapore Emergency Room were far more sensitive and specific than those recommended by the national public health service.
- A comparison of SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 shows that the new virus grows far more rapidly in cell culture but produced a far weaker immune response, not triggering interferon at all and activating only 5 of 13 pro-inflammatory mediators.
MANUSCRIPTS- NOT PEER REVIEWED
- A model developed by Swiss physicists demonstrates the critical importance of active surveillance in controlling outbreaks as lockdowns end.
- An analysis of the Diamond Princess Cruise ship suggests that the primary mode of spread for Covid-19 was through close personal contact and fomites and not through long distance airborne transmission.
- An analysis of national case fatality rates suggests that, within the OECD, those countries which have reduced health service expenditures tended to experience higher rates of negative outcomes for Covid-19 patients.
