Peer Review, The Press, and Seroprevalence Misinformation Three recent studies seem to be delivering startling information about the prevalence of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 and the percent of infections that are asymptomatic, but they may be telling us more about the flaws inherent in the release of studies in the absence of peer review.
Research News
Three large collaborative studies include a catalog of potential interactions between the virus and human cells, a system for pooling patient results from 5 countries, and a study of the virus in aerosols. A study points to the impact of Covid-19 on other causes of death and three meta-analyses deliver sobering news about the lack of effective treatment alternatives
- A major collaborative effort** injected all known viral proteins into cell cultures and found protein:protein interactions with 332 human proteins, which include potential targets for 69 existing FDA-approved drugs.
- A study of non-Covid-19 deaths in England and Wales** shows an increase in week 14 of 2020, four weeks after the first Covid-19 death. These are early stage results, but they demonstrate that the public health impact of the disease extends beyond the direct impact of the disease.
- An unprecedented collaboration among 96 hospitals in five countries** to coordinate medical records creates a data set that can be used to study the clinical course of almost 30,000 Covid-19 patients. The authors present an initial analysis describing the clinical characteristics of the disease with high precision.
- A new study of SARS-CoV-2 in aerosols** finds that the virus may remain infective for far longer than previously believed, up to 16 hours.
- A cohort of 56 patients shed the SARS-CoV-2 virus for up to five weeks following their first positive test.
- Meta-analyses of Chloroquine** antibiotics in children** and antivirals in children** find little evidence of efficacy for any of these as a treatment for Covid-19.
