Research News
Poor preparation forced the use of costly intervention strategies, people with symptoms are not staying home, studies of droplets do not support the 6 foot social distance, travel restrictions can limit spread, antibodies take 20 days to fully develop, telemedicine use has more than doubled, and South Korea's contact tracing tool required massive integration of data systems.
- A review of the available literature** on the cost and effectiveness of infection control strategies concludes that the classic model of contact tracing and case isolation, together with hand hygiene, face masks, and PPE for health care workers are the most cost effective strategies. In this case, the high cost strategies of social distancing and school closures were made necessary by lack of preparedness.
- A questionnaire based study** finds that the presence of COVID-19 symptoms is not reducing the probability that respondents will leave their home, pointing to a dire need for public health education.
- A review of the available evidence on airborne* droplets and aerosols points out the flaws in the simplistic social distancing guidelines and demonstrates the need to investigate this issue more carefully. Eight of ten studies showed droplets traveling more than six feet. The studies do not address the question of the infectivity of these droplets.
- A Chinese study** demonstrates the impact of travel restrictions, particularly from Wuhan, on the incidence of disease in other Chinese cities.
- A study of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2** in 221 patients showed a peak in IgG at 19-21 days after initial symptoms with a subsequent decline that calls for further investigation.
- An analysis of telemedicine usage* at NYU hospitals found a 135% increase in usage for urgent care since the pandemic began. It seems likely that this will greatly expand its use even after the disease has declined.
- An overview of South Korea's IT based contact tracing system shows both the extent of systems that were employed and the challenges addressed in creating the system.
