The US Had the Least Effective Response to the Pandemic of Any Country in the World That scathing indictment is buried in the back of a preprint of an article by Mexican researchers focused on the role of temperature in limiting the spread of disease, which barely mentions the bombshell in Figure 5. Let's unpack it.
Research News
SUMMARY
- The rate of undiagnosed SARS-CoV-2 infections is 18 times higher among health care workers as compared to non-health care workers in a University setting.
- A cohort of 33 COVID-19 pneumonia patients continued to shed virus for as long as seven weeks in stool in sputum and stool samples, long after throat swabs were negative.
- A study of residents of the Seattle nursing home that experienced the first major outbreak in the US demonstrates that infection-control strategies focused solely on symptomatic residents were not sufficient to prevent transmission of SARS-CoV-2 within the facility.
- A metabolomic and lipidomic study of COVID-19 patients suggests there may be previously unrecognized associations with lipid metabolism and hepatic function in this disease.
- Elevated troponin levels on admission are strongly associated with mortality in COVID-19 patients. Troponin is a marker of cardiac injury.
- Social distancing estimates derived from cell phone data may substantially improve modeling predictions from the widely used IHME models.
- All five household contacts of a health care worker in Wuhan with COVID-19 developed asymptomatic disease, consistent with a growing body of evidence that a high percentage of infections are asymptomatic.
