What Do the New York Antibody Data Really Mean? A deeply flawed study asserts 20% of New Yorkers have been infected. Once again, the rush to release results has produced more confusion than understanding. At this critical moment, confusion is the enemy.
Research News
SUMMARY
- The first in-depth characterization** of the host transcriptional response to SARS-CoV-2 suggests that the virus elicits a less robust response than influenza A and RSV, which may help explain its unique clinical course and suggests interventions to explore for treatment.
- A comparison of ten commercially available antibody assays** demonstrates substantial variability in test performance and suggests the need for both thorough evaluation of available tests and caution in their use.
- Harvard researchers** describe a reverse transcriptase loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) assay to detect SARS-CoV-2 that uses readily available reagents and, they assert, is simple, inexpensive, and rapid.
- A detailed contact tracing study from Taiwan finds that only 11 out of 682 close contacts of three cases tested positive for SARS-CoV2, suggesting that the transmission rate to close contacts was less than 2%. The authors do not explore the reasons for this low rate.
- A large, Israeli healthcare organization** developed an extremely sensitive model for identifying high risk intervals using their own tools and experience, on the front lines, in the "fog of war".
- Of 207 consecutive COVID-19 patients in the Stanford hospitals** 35% had gastrointestinal symptoms and that subgroup tended to have more severe disease. This adds to the growing literature indicating that this disease involves many organ systems and suggests GI involvement may be an indicator of increased risk.
