Research News
A detailed study of the impact of public health interventions** provides a clear picture of the effect of the type and timing of social distancing policies and estimates that, in the US alone, 5 million cases were prevented by intervention strategies.
Elevations in deaths from pneumonia and influenza**, particularly for the period before testing for COVID-19 was readily available, suggests a substantial underestimation in the number of deaths from COVID-19. This has major implications for our evaluation of public health interventions and case fatality rates.
A marked rise in out of hospital cardiac arrests over the course of the epidemic in Italy may explain the concurrent decrease in ST segment elevation myocardial infarctions observed in other studies. In other words, those with symptoms of an MI may have avoided hospitals during the peak of the pandemic with the result that untreated cases progressed to cardiac arrest.
Add the skin* to the list of organ systems affected by SARS-CoV-2. A Spanish study found five different categories of dermatological diseases in COVID-19 patients.
Ten percent of patients in China* shed the SARS-CoV-2 virus for more than 30 days and, among a group of such patients, the median duration of shedding was 53.5 days with a maximum of 81 days. This prolonged shedding is a major challenge for preventing reemergence of COVID-19.
More than half of "asymptomatic" cases* showed signs of pneumonia on chest CT in a Chinese study. This suggests that asymptomatic cases may have undetected pathology from the disease.
RNA sequencing data from COVID-19 patients** suggests that the SARS-CoV-2 virus may infect cells through phagocytosis in addition to the established ACE-2 receptor route. The study also finds evidence that pro-inflammatory signaling related to aging may play a role in exacerbating disease in the elderly and that a change in platelet gene expression might be at the root of coagulopathies.
A reduction in blood donors in China by 67% since the pandemic began raises serious concerns about the impact of COVID-19 on care for other diseases due to inadequate blood supplies.
