Research News
An AI based search of a large electronic medical record database**, found that diarrhea and cough as well as disorders of smell and taste were strong predictors of a positive test for SARS-CoV-2 among those tested.
A team from Scotland** and a Cornell-led team** both argue that current interventions have primarily stabilized rates, but have not eliminated the disease, suggesting a reproduction number close to one. In light of that, both teams argue that relaxing social distancing will lead to renewed growth in disease rates.
A team of virologists disputes the notion that there are two strains of SARS-CoV-2. The authors suggest that proving independent functional differences would be extremely difficult, it is unlikely to happen, and there a many more strains of the virus than just those two.
A study of cases in Wuhan tracks the impact of public health interventions on the Reproduction Number, which hovered between 3 and 4 during the early stages of the outbreak but dropped dramatically with a city lockdown, traffic suspension and home quarantine, falling below 1.0 within two weeks.
Research from Taiwan traced and tested all household contacts of people returning from Wuhan. They document a secondary spread of only 0.7% among the 2761 contacts of 100 cases, which demonstrates the extremely effective response to the outbreak in that country.
Supplemental testing of samples collected for an ongoing study of the flu in Seattle documents a sharp rise in cases in the community starting on February 24, a month after the appearance of the first case. This suggests that an early aggressive lockdown might have dramatically attenuated the severity of the epidemic in Seattle and that cases were already widespread in the community at the time of the first death on February 26.
A multi-institutional study and a study from NYU both conclude that anti-hypertensive medication is not related to the course of COVID-19.
A study of the effect of stay at home orders** on people with pre-existing mental health conditions finds that their symptoms were improved by exercise, regular work, gardening, and worsened by media time and, among those receiving psychotherapy, interruption in treatment.
