Research News
Early use of case isolation coupled with 2-layer contact tracing appears to have played a key role in Hong Kong's highly successful public health intervention in response to the pandemic.
Modeling suggests that early use of lock downs in Santa Clara dramatically reduced the number of deaths from COVID-19 in the county and the authors propose that careful lifting of stay at home orders can now begin.
Using a non-standard model, a non-epidemiologist claims to show that social distancing measures had no effect on the course of the pandemic in four different European countries (Spain, Italy, France, and the UK). This an obtuse, poorly presented paper that provides no discussion of the many papers that document clear and dramatic effects of stay home orders. I include it here not because it is high quality research (it's not), but because it is likely to be used by those who seek to undermine efforts to promote thoughtful public health interventions.
Detailed contact tracing in Wuhan reveals multiple examples of asymptomatic spread of COVID-19 among household members.
Testing for SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater in Paris suggests its potential usefulness as a tool to track the epidemic and could provide a cost effective to to test for early signs of a COVID-19 outbreak.
Myocardial infarction patients in Hong Kong during the course of the pandemic tended to present with more advanced disease and suffer worse outcomes than observed prior to the pandemic, suggesting the health impacts of the outbreak go beyond the direct effects of infection.
