How to End the Lockdown: Pooled Workplace Testing and Customer Contact Tracing As epidemic curves fall in response to the strict lockdowns, the new challenge facing government agencies here in Washington, around the country, and around the world is getting people safely back to work. Testing will, of course, play a key role in doing that, but the lack of adequate testing supplies has constrained our ability to act. Pooled workplace testing can provide a strategy for early identification of cases with automatic contact tracing and limited resources.
Research News
SARS-CoV-2 testing results from New York State* suggest that secondary attack rates among household members of those diagnosed during March were 38%, far higher than those found in earlier studies. Prevalence among among all members of those house households range from 23% for children<5 to 68% among those >64 years of age.
A CDC survey of COVID-19 in 420 prisons found 2,778 cases and 15 deaths among staff and 4,893 cases with 88 deaths among prisoners. Case fatality rates were 1% among staff and 2% among prisoners.
An analysis of the impact of long term air pollution levels** on COVID-19 mortality and case fatality rates found that annual average nitrogen dioxide levels were consistently associated with both outcome measures independent of ozone or fine particulates.
An Israeli study** demonstrated the use of sample pooling, using 731 RT-PCR tests to identify six cases in a population of 5,464 people, 87% less than would be required for individual testing.
A study of the impact of blanket reopening strategies for US states** observes that the current delays between infection acquisition and case confirmation, including delays in obtaining test results, coupled with insufficient broader testing and contact tracing will mask any rebound in COVID-19 until exponential growth is well underway.
A French survey to assess the mental health impact** of the pandemic found that students, females, and the disabled tended to have the greatest reduction in mental wellbeing, while being employed, having more social contacts, and having access to the outdoors tended to improve wellbeing.
