Research News
An international study of health care workers** found that the rate of infection with SARS-CoV-2 among front line health care workers ranged from 2.0% among those in ambulatory clinics to 9.2% among those caring for COVID-19 inpatients, from 6.6 to 24 times the hazard for the general public with a rate of 0.33%. Lack of adequate personal protective equipment increased this risk by another 20% among frontline workers.
A model of Swedish public health interventions** predicts that current policies of moderate social distancing and strong shielding of the elderly should prevent overwhelming medical care resources, but any less stringent policies would result in overwhelming hospitals and more stringent policies could save additional lives.
An Italian study found** lower rates of smoking among COVID-19 patients than among the general population. The authors' conclusions that this population is at lower risk need to be further examined.
Intensive disease surveillance in South Korea** appears to have helped minimize the time between diagnosis of a case and diagnosis of those infected by that case, a difference that could have played a key role in limiting the pandemic in that country.
Models of the Italian outbreaks** suggest that anything more than a 20% increase in mobility post shutdown could lead to a major second wave of disease in that country.
The outbreak appears to have reduced routine care and, as a result, pediatric vaccination rates. This raises the risks of elevations in rates of other serious diseases in the future.
A new clinical assay for SARS-CoV-2 has a sensitivity as good or better than existing tests, but provides results in less than 20 minutes.
A triple drug therapy with interferon, lopinavir, and ribaviran showed a significant reduction in the duration of viral shedding in patients with mild to moderate symptoms.
Screening of Healthcare workers (HCWs) in the UK demonstrates the dramatic impact of the lockdown on reducing infections. Despite the fact that the number of cases and therefore the number of workplace exposures for HCWs peaked after the lockdown, the decline in HCW infections began shortly after the lockdown. This would imply that a significant change in their risk occurred sometime near the initiation of the lockdown.
A genetic analysis of the SARS-CoV-2 virus** identifies four main strains and ten significant groups of mutations and suggests it may be appropriate to modify strategies for preventing and treating infections according to viral strain.
