Herd Immunity and COVID-19: The Debate That May Define Our Next Step The seemingly simple concept defines the ultimate exit strategy for the disease. But the reality of this tiny virus seems endlessly complex. A few recent papers have proposed a nuanced view of herd immunity that some will be sure to insist should be part of our plans for ending the lockdown.
Research News
A vaccine trial in rhesus macaque monkeys** of an adenovirus vectored vaccine encoding the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 reduced viral load and prevented pneumonia following viral challenge. This vaccine has already been entered into Phase I clinical trials and shows promise as a potential human vaccine.
A trial of monoclonal antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein** in transgenic mice identified a specific antibody that protected against a intranasal challenge with the virus. Given the evidence that injection of antibodies from human plasma improves recovery time, this finding suggests the possibility of a treatment based on monoclonal antibodies.
A study of the genetics of corona viruses in bats** finds evidence of intercontinental dispersal of beta-coronaviruses in bats from China and Hong Kong to Central and Southern Africa. Given the demonstrated potential for these viruses to cause devastating disease, this news should spark expanded efforts to study and monitor this potential source of zoonotic infections.
A paper describing a model of herd immunity asserts** that individual heterogeneity could reduce the required level of herd immunity to control the spread of COVID-19. The model does not take into account environmental and social factors that influence the spread of the virus.
Expression of ACE2 in the olfactory neuroepithelium** may explain both CNS involvement in the COVID-19 epidemic and the loss of smell often associated with the disease.
Expression of ACE2 on the surface of the eye** confirms this as a potential route of exposure and infection for SARS-CoV-2. This should be carefully considered in future infection control efforts.
