SUMMARY
- A model of county level COVID-19 deaths and reported cases in the US found that population density, poverty, and minority populations, especially African Americans, were associated with increased risk, while social distancing decreased risk. This has major implications for both predicting spread and targeting interventions to reduce inequity in the impact of the disease.
- A study of SARS-CoV-2 seroconversion in Asymptomatic health care workers (HCWs) found that 24.4% of HCWs in a tertiary care hospital had antibodies, 37.5% in those with symptoms and 17.1% in those without. Antibody levels are significantly higher among those who are asymptomatic.
- A study of seroconversion rates among SARS-CoV-2 positive hospital patients in France found that 57% of asymptomatic carriers did not develop antibodies and those that did become antibody positive had lower antibody levels than patients with symptomatic disease. This raises questions about the level of immunity conferred by antibodies in asymptomatic carriers.
- A Japanese study of salivary testing supports its use as an alternative to nasopharyngeal swabs for detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This has the potentially to dramatically increase the ease of testing and to reduce the risk to healthcare workers related to sample collection.
- Evidence of immunosuppression by SARS-CoV-2 was found in a study of innate immune response to the virus. Reduced indicators included expression of genes involved in toll-like receptor and interleukin signaling, chemokine binding, neutrophil degranulation and interactions with lymphoid cells as well as proportions of neutrophils and macrophages. These findings suggest that the virus specifically targets cellular immunity to reduce the host's capacity to fight infections.
- The nature of the T-cell response was linked to the development of severe symptoms from COVID-19 in a study that found a stronger response of S-protein specific T-cells producing inflammatory cytokines was associated with more severe disease. This may provide a marker to predict for severe disease and a possible approach to treatment.
- Antibodies from selected and cloned B-cells blocked entry of SARS-CoV-2 into human cells in vitro, suggesting the potential for a treatment option based on monoclonal antibodies.
- The area of visceral adipose tissue demonstrated a strong association with the risk of ICU treatment in a German study. This could be an important tool for predicting risk and managing patients.
- SARS-CoV-2 RNA was found in environmental samples near a hospital in Wuhan. Soil, air, and water at specific locations around the hospital were contaminated, which suggests a need for extra steps to prevent spread through the environment in these areas.
