Will COVID-19 kill mass transit? Nothing screams unavoidable proximity quite like public transportation at rush hour. With governments around the country easing up on stay-at-home orders, Americans seem to be returning to their cars with enthusiasm. The future for mass transit may be less rosy..
Research News
9.0% of population in Milan Has Antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 A seroprevalence study of blood donations in Milan found antibody prevalence rose from 2.7% to 9.0% over the course of the outbreak. Given that the younger age group giving samples is more likely to be exposed, this is probably a high end estimate of asymptomatic infections.
No Secondary Transmission Identified in Early COVID-19 Case* A contact investigation for an early confirmed case in Seattle identified 50 contacts, including 11 who reported unprotected face to face interaction. Of the 37 who were tested, none were positive for the virus. Of 23 tested six weeks later, none had antibodies. These results suggest that there was no secondary transmission for this patient.
RNA Vaccine Protects Primates from COVID-19 A single dose of an RNA based virus conferred immunity to primates challenged with SARS-CoV-2 in a Seattle based study. This promising result provides a strong candidate for a human vaccine.
Elevated Cholesterol May Enhance SARS-COV-2 Entry into Cells Research by a Chinese team suggests that high serum cholesterol facilitates the entry of the virus into human cells. If true, this could provide a partial explanation for the higher rates of severe disease among older patients.
Plasmin Appears to Mediate Thrombotic Events in COVID-19 Based on patterns of proteins unregulated in response to SARS-CoV-2, investigators propose a thrombogenesis model based on elevated plasmin levels priming interaction between complement and platelet activating systems in the lung epithelia. If this is correct, it suggests therapeutic pathways for treatment of that element of the disease.
Heavily Cited New York Seroprevalence Study Released NYS state Department of Health released an antibody study conducted at grocery stores in mid-April that estimated 20% of New York City residents had asymptomatic infections. They make little mention of the potential problems with selection bias in choosing from shoppers to represent the population. The Milan sample, which would not have this problem since they chose blood donors, found a 9.0% prevalence of antibodies. In fact there is serious potential for selection bias as outlined in my blogpost written when these data were first released. It is disappointing to see that there is no serious consideration of this flaw in their manuscript. This study should be considered with caution.
