COVID Lives Matter As America takes to the streets to express its anger and frustration over the deaths of its black citizens, COVID-19 continues to kill. Cruelly, the pandemic appears to pick its victims based on the color of their skin..
Research News
SARS-CoV-2 Infections in New York City Tied to Indicators of Socioeconomic Status Researchers at Mt. Sinai Medical Center found that infection rates at the ZIP Code level was closely tied to household crowding, lack of Medical Insurance, low income, and unemployment. As an ecological study of ZIP code areas, the study is limited in its ability to draw inferences about individual risk, but it does describe the impact of neighborhoods. The mortality analysis adjusted for age using only the percent of the population above 65 years of age, a variable unlikely to fully account for the impact of age given its critical role in determining disease severity.
SARS-CoV-2 Infections in New York City Tied to Indicators of Socioeconomic Status Another study conducted by researchers from the Columbia business school found that household size, % below the poverty line, and %>65 were strong predictors of the rate of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in NYC ZIP code areas with household size being the dominant variable. Again, the adjustment for age seems inadequate, but it is highly likely that household crowding plays a critical role in spreading the disease
A Chinese Study Demonstrates the Benefits of Strict Adherence to Rules to Protect Public Health The study of public health measure in Wuhan emphasized the risks associated with not following public health measures, but the truly striking finding involved the degree to which those measures were followed. 37% of 8158 respondents to a public health survey never left home during the pandemic and, among those who did, 98% wore a mask. Out of all subjects, 99.2% agreed that the fight with COVID-19 was everyone's job.
Attitudes About Reopening Do Not Follow Party Lines 40% of Republicans and 44% of Democrats favored risk minimization strategies. 24% of Republicans and 20% of Democrats favored faster economic recovery to safety.
Saliva Samples May be Sufficient for Abbot Labs SAS-CoV-2 Samples Tests of saliva as a testing medium on 96 saliva samples with 64 nasopharyngeal samples (conventional sampling) found 78% positive agreement and 100% negative agreement. The saliva samples stayed positive even when stored at room temperature for five days.
