Cremation Rates in Wuhan Suggest Ten-fold Underreporting of Pandemic Deaths Media reports suggest that crematoria in Wuhan expanded hours from 4 to 24 hours/day, even after operations were modified to cut time per cremation in half. In addition, 40 temporary crematoria were put into operation. Based on these data and the sale of urns, investigators estimate that there were 36,000 deaths during the pandemic, more than ten times the official COVID-19 death toll of 2,524.
A Rapid, Inexpensive SARS-CoV-2 Chinese investigators describe a new test for the virus using a nanozyme based chemiluminescence paper assay for the spike antigen. The test detected a pseudo virus at concentrations of 7.8 x 10^6 copies per ml. Analysis could be done with a smartphone app. This has the potential to provide a rapid, inexpensive screening tool that requires no special equipment.
Human Genetic Variation Does Not Seem to Affect COVID-19 Severity A study using data on the sequence from the ACE2 and TMPRSS2 data (SARS-COV-2 receptors) for 50 thousand subjects from the UK Biobank does not find significant differences between the 74 subjects with known infections and those not infected. These results suggest that, at least with regard to receptor affinity, there is no clear evidence of genetic differences in susceptibility to COVID-19.
Autopsy Data Tracks SARS-CoV-2 in the Brain A German study of data from 32 COVID-19 autopsies suggests that entry to the central nervous system (CNS) occurs by invasion of the olfactory epithelium and follows the track of the first cranial nerve to the brain. The analysis also suggests that this invasion may be associated with thromboembolic strokes.
SARS-CoV-2 is Capable of Infecting a Broad Rang of Mammals A computer modeling study of the affinity of the viral spike protein and the ACE2 receptor concluded that the virus could infect a broad range of mammalian hosts, particularly primates. These findings tend to support the notion that this is of animal origin undercut the notion that it was enhanced in the laboratory.
Only 60% of Respondents in UK Survey Would Use Contact Tracking Apps A survey of 48,000 UK National Health Service (NHS) users found resistance to using smartphone based contact tracing apps, particularly among those who believe they might be infected. This documents the clear challenge faced in promoting these apps and limits their use for contact tracing.
Counties With Higher Black Populations Had Elevated Risk of Death from COVID 19 Even after accounting for household crowding and lower income, mortality rates in US counties rises with increasing proportions of African Americans. This further documents sharp disparities in the nature of the pandemic in this population group.
