Twenty percent of grocery workers test positive for SARS-CoV-2 Harvard researchers tested workers at in a randomly selected grocery store for the virus. 21 of 104 workers tested positive. Those working with direct customer exposure had 4.7 times the odds of infection. These results indicate a need for far more thorough screening and testing of front line workers, particularly those with high rates of customer exposure.
Viral Load for SARS-CoV-2 similar across age groups A comparison of the concentration of the virus in 3,300 samples from positive tests found no significant difference across age categories. These results suggest that children are as likely as adults to spread COVID-19.
British study provides most detailed picture of time frame for antibody response to date With two months of follow up on 177 cases of COVID-19 from the first detection of SARS-coV-2, this study provides fine detail on the timing of the emergence of antibodies and their duration. Of note, the study showed that some cases required several weeks to develop antibodies and, at 60 days, 8% had no detectable antibodies.
A recently identified immune response may play a key role in lung damage An extracellular structure composed of strands of DNA and mixture of enzymes and other proteins is part of a normal immune response created by neutrophils, but, according to this paper, it may play a major role in lung damage in COVID-19.
Genome analysis suggests that SARS-CoV-2 spreads in waves Sequencing of viral genomes from Philadelphia suggest that there are sequences of major expansion of the genome. This would be consistent with super-spreading events playing a major role in the spread of COVID-19.
Heparin may inhibit entry of SARS-CoV-2 into human cells In addition to helping to limit coagulation, heparin may play a role in limiting the infection by impaired the ability of the virus to enter human cells. The authors suggest that intranasal administration early in the course of infection might be particularly helpful.
Trials of Convalescent Plasma show a decrease in severe symptoms A meta-analysis of plasma from recovered patients was well tolerated and reduced recovery times in younger patients, but did not confer an advantage to older patients.
Radiation of lungs shows dramatic effects on COVID-19 in preliminary trial Five elderly patients (median age 90) with severe disease received whole lung radiation. Within 24 hours, three were weaned from oxygen, 4 showed radiographic improvement of the lungs and mental acuity improved. If these effects are replicated in a larger trial this could be an important tool for halting the disease in severely ill patients.
