Research News
A Smart Phone App with 500,000 users demonstrates failure to quarantine The App found a substantial fraction of users left their homes on a daily basis across the US. Even after testing positive for SARS-COV-2, some users continued to go to work, some without a mask.
SARS-CoV-2 Infects 44% of Front Line Health Care Workers in London A prospective cohort study followed health care workers actively caring for COVID-19 patients at University College London Hospital for two months. 23% were positive for antibodies at the start of the study, and 21% tested positive for the virus, developed antibodies, or both. Of those who seroconverted, 58% were asymptomatic. It is notable that none of the patients initially positive for antibodies became reinfected.
A Meta-analysis suggests that the majority of transmission occurs before symptoms A simulation based on data from 17 published studies of SARS-CoV-2 transmission suggests that 56% of transmission occurs when cases are pre-symptomatic.
Analysis of Massive Medical Records Database Show COVID19 Symptoms An analysis of 77,000 records from patients tested for SARS-CoV-2 with 2,300 positive found those with lose of smell or test 27 more likely to test positive. Fever, cough, and respiratory difficulties gave 2.6, 2.2, and 2.2 times the rate of positive tests respectively. Muscle and joint pain as well as diarrhea were also elevated in positive tests.
The Prevalence of Viral Genes Influenced by Locations of Labs An analysis of gene sequences finds that some large, high-volume labs may influence the apparent prevalence of specific mutations and suggests a method to correct for this bias in the data.
High Resolution Electron Micrographs Produce Stunning Images of SARS CoV-2. Detailed images show binding to cell surface, formation of vacuoles, and contents of vacuoles.
