Hydroxychloroquine and COVID19: Attack of the Treatment Zombie The story of hydroxychloroquine should provide an object lesson in why science takes time and why drug companies are required to jump through all the hoops they do. It is not just because the government loves red tape. Sometimes, red tape saves lives.
Research News
Hydroxycholoroquine Provides No Benefit in Animal Studies Studies in hamsters and macaque monkeys found no benefits from hydroxychloroquine for the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infections. In a proper drug evaluation, these studies would have been conducted first and these results would have ended further discussion of this as a treatment in humans.
Spanish Researchers Document Superspreaders with Genomics An analysis of global data on genetic sequences of SARS-CoV-2 demonstrates multiple episodes of explosive spread of individual clones that suggest super spreading events. This supports growing evidence that these events play a major role in the spread of this disease.
Italian Researchers Provide Tool for Tracking SARS-CoV-2 Mutations A team from Milan has developed research tools that account for the intra-host variability in the genome when developing models and maps of viral spread. The tool is open source and the authors have created a website that allows users to observe the spread and mutation of the virus over time.
COVID-19 Patients Have Elevated Rates of Blood Clots in their Legs. Russian researchers performed ultrasound exams on the legs of 75 COVID-19 patients and found deep venous thrombosis (clots in the veins) of 20% of patients and impaired blood flow in 71%. The two groups (DVT v. no DVT) did not differ significantly with respect to common risk factors including diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.
Model Suggests Daily Workplace Testing May be Necessary to Stem Disease Spread. In the absence of other control measures, reducing the reproduction number for COVID-19 below 1.0 will require that workplace testing be conducted every one to two days.
