Masks, hand washing, and social distancing estimated to SARS-CoV-2 infection risk by 84%. A study of 1,050 asymptomatic contacts of COVID-19 cases in Thailand compared those who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 to those who did not. The adjusted odds ratios associated with protective measures were 0.23 for wearing a mask all the time, 0.15 for maintaining social distance >1 meter, 0.24 for keeping social contact <15 minutes, and 0.33 for frequent hand washing. All prevention measures combined were associated with a reduction in risk of 84%.
Italian blood donors 1.0% positive for SARS-COV-2 antibodies Over the course of the epidemic, Foggia, Italy has had a COVID-19 incidence rate of 0.19% for documented cases. In 904 samples of blood given during the month of May, 2 months after the pandemic, 9 or 0.99% tested positive. These cases are all required to be asymptomatic at the time of donation. The willingness to give blood is probably not correlated with a suspicion of having had or not had an infection, so selection bias seems unlikely, but blood donors might not represent the general population. They will tend to be younger (they must be less than 65) and healthier. They may also be more likely to be exposed to the virus than older people which would result in an over estimate of the true seroprevalence for the general population. These results suggest that asymptomatic cases represent 4-6 times the number of documented cases.
3.53% of Wuhan residents returning to work were seropositive for SARS-CoV-2 IgG Antibody testing was mandatory for those 18-65 returning to work, meaning this should provide an unbiased estimates of seroprevalence in this group. These results suggest the true infection rate is 3-4 times the reported number of cases.
Research adds to controversy over anti-phospholipid antibodies. A team of Italian researchers presents data countering the argument described in a previously featured paper that anti-phospholipid antibodies increase disease severity.
Impaired cellular immunity may play an important role in disease severity. A team from the Netherlands finds that severe cases of COVID-19 have similar IgG antibody response to less severe cases, but have marked differences in CD4+ T cell response.
