TRUMP SUPPORTERS ARE DYING FOR HIS REELECTION: THE EPIDEMIOLOGY OF DENIAL The science is clear. Those who attended the Tulsa rally (along with their friends and family wherever they came from) will be dying to see him re-elected. Literally. And Trump, through a perverse bioterrorism of ignorance and denial, is willing to let them die.
Research News
Genomic analysis identifies genes activated in severe cases An analysis of genes activated in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 as compared to sepsis patients finds 68 genes that are unique to SARS-CoV-2 response. These include a set associated with lipid programming, beta-catenin, and protein kinase C, all of which are involved in membrane repair, clotting, and wound healing. These suggest potential drug targets for further research.
Genetics of SARS-CoV-2 in Chicago suggest viral differences affect spread of the infection Three major clades of the virus were identified by researchers at Northwestern, one from New York, one from Seattle, and one emerging locally, were associated with different viral loads in the upper airways. The New York related clade was present in higher concentrations suggesting it would spread more easily.
SARS-CoV2 amplifies gene expression associated with aging. Genes that are altered in the elderly and are known to be involved in pro-inflammatory, apoptotic, T cell polarization pathways were up- regulated and those involved in viral replication suppression or the first barrier to viral infection remained downregulated in the elderly. These same genes are associated with poor prognosis for COVID-19. The pronounced overlap between aging and the response to the virus observed in the blood of the elderly may explain clinical symptoms more common in older age groups including blood clots, strokes, heart attack, multi-organ failure etc. in severe cases.
