Is Trump Killing Americans? Evidence suggests that Donald Trump is directly and objectively responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of Americans and the severe illness and chronic disability of hundreds of thousands more. Epidemiologists seek to identify risk factors for disease. It is time to evaluate our Risk Factor in Chief.
Research News
French study suggests that young children unlikely to transmit SARS-CoV-2 A study of three French elementary schools with students who had documented infections found no secondary cases among pupils, teachers, and staff during the 14 days following their diagnosis. The three students had mild symptoms.
Non-medical staff at higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 infections than ICU caregivers A study of Oxford University Hospitals found that working in hospital units interacting with COVID-19 patients result in a 2.5 fold increase in infection risk. Porters and cleaners had a doubling of risk, but having an infected household contact caused a 4.6-fold increase. ICU staff actually had half the risk of comparable workers in other areas of the hospitals.
Italian data demonstrate impact of mask mandates A study of Italian data from six cities clearly demonstrates that public mandates to wear mask increased the rate of decline in COVID-19 cases beyond the benefits of lockdown policies. A US study demonstrated a similar positive effect from masking mandates.
Use of multiple SARS-CoV-2 antigens improves value of antibody screening tests A French study using seven different SARS-CoV-2 antigens along with two seasonal coronavirus antigens and three flu antigens for comparison provides a uniquely sensitive test for evaluating past infections and mild infections.
Study documents the rise of SARS-CoV-2 infections in New York A study of residual samples from patients at Mt. Sinai hospital shows that there were cases in the city by early to mid February and the infection rate in the city rose to 19% by mid-April. This appears to validate the early seroprevalence studies by the state health department.
SARS-CoV-2 killed 1.5% of those infected in New York City A team from Columbia University and the New York City Health Department estimates that the overall infection fatality rate during the spring peak was 1.45% with age specific rates as high as 17% for those 75 and over.
Evidence suggests that some people without antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 may have been exposed A study of family members of COVID-19 cases found evidence of T-cell immunity even among subjects without SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. This suggests both that the infection may be even more widespread than suggested by antibody screening and that there may be some immunity among those without antibodies.
Only half of people wearing masks do so correctly A Brazilian study in an area with high incidence of COVID-19 found that 85% of the population wore masks, but 47% of those wearing masks either wore them incorrectly, had a poorly fitting mask, or was observed touching their face.
Fourteen day quarantine may not be long enough Researchers from Spain and the University of Texas estimated that up to 9.2% of patients 42 or younger and 18.6% of patients older than 42 years could develop symptoms after the end of the period.
A quarter of samples from hospital HVAC system positive for SARS-CoV-2 25% of samples from the air handling system of the Oregon Health Sciences hospital were positive for the virus. The samples were not evaluated for viability.
Exposure to Seasonal Coronaviruses does not appear to influence severity of SARS-CoV-2 infections A team of French researchers found no significant difference in levels of antibodies to seasonal (non-SARS-CoV-2) coronavirus antibody levels among three groups, COVID-19 patients, children with multi system inflammatory (Kawasaki) syndrome related to SARS-CoV-2, and a group of mildly symptomatic or asymptomatic controls. This suggests that the reduced severity of COVID-19 in young children cannot be explained by exposure to prior exposure to other types of corona viruses.
French study shows five fold increase in Kawasaki Syndrome during COVID-19 peak* Researchers at a tertiary care pediatric hospital in Paris found a dramatic spike in Kawasaki syndrome, a severe, potentially fatal, multi-system inflammatory disease, in response to SARS-CoV-2 and retrospectively document a smaller but significant spike in response to the 2009, H1N1 pandemic.
SARS-CoV-2 does not appear to spread among hospitalized patients* A Dutch study of viral genetics among patients and staff in three hospitals does not find evidence of a specific genotype spreading within the hospital, suggesting nosocomial spread is not a prominent concern

The Epidemiology of Politics Packing thousands of people together in an arena (or even a church) in a city where COVID-19 cases are spiking to yell, chant, and cheer for a couple of hours with no masks on might seem like a bad idea. A really, really bad idea..
