Trump's Knee on the Neck of Science In the past week, both the FDA and the CDC have collapsed to the pavement. Scientific rigor has been cast as Deep State conspiracy. Its subjugation for political expediency has already cost human lives.
Research News
Controlling pandemic requires getting R far below one. A simple model of disease spread suggests that public health measure need to be introduced that drop R below 0.4 to get pandemic under control in less than 4 months. At an R of 0.9 with 37,000 cases, eliminating the virus would require two years.
Long Term symptoms common for hospitalized patients A study of 110 hospitalized patients in the UK found that 74% had persistent symptoms twelve weeks after their first admission to the hospital.
Even home made cloth mask may produce far greater reduction in droplet exposure than previously estimated A British study estimated that a person standing 2 meters from a person coughing without a mask would be exposed to over 1,000 times more respiratory droplets than someone standing 5 cm from a person wearing a basic, single layer cloth mask.
Fewer hook-ups in COVID time A survey of sexual practices showed a 74% drop (from 31% to 8%) in the portion of people reporting casual hookups and increases in sex with a spouse and masturbation during lockdown as compared to 2019.
Survey finds most COVID-19 cases did not have a clearly identified source of exposure An Ohio study reports that only 40% of cases had a clearly identified exposure to a known case. Cases were more likely to have traveled and less likely to work at home than non-cases. This implies that the majority of infections with SARS-COV-2 are occurring away from the home, primarily at work and other settings with extended interaction.
Saliva samples for SARS-CoV-2 provide long term stability with no decay Yale researchers document the validity of saliva samples held for as long as 25 days at temperatures ranging from 4-30 degrees centigrade.
DOG OF THE WEEK
Deeply Flawed Study Purports to Link George Floyd Protests to COVID-19 rise* In an astonishing failure of peer review, a Mississippi study fails to provide a detailed protocol, fails to follow the limited protocol it does provide, fails to document its data sources, and relies on a simplistic model that considers no covariates to explain the rise in cases despite a more than 40 fold difference in observed effect size. Once again, non-epidemiologists prove that epidemiology is harder than it looks. This paper should be retracted.
