Pride goeth before a fall
Nick Milton's post today on pride has me walking down memory lane. I can remember one of the first conversations I had with an attorney on the values and benefits of document assembly. When we talked about everyone contributing to the building of the best possible document, he adamantly wanted nothing to do with it. Why? Because HIS work product was superior to everyone else's and he wouldn't dream of using someone else's lesser text. I could have used Nick's post those many years ago. He notes, "In some cases it acts as a real dis-incentive, but if harnessed well it can be a powerful driver for KM behaviours." Have you had to turn pride from a disincentive to an incentive? Knock me over with a feather
I was quite surprised by the research from Northwestern University on conference attendance. I was totally on board with the original hypothesis "that virtual conferences would be less effective at forming new collaborations among scientists," as, quite frankly, that has been my personal experience. Adi Gaskell goes on to write, "The model was applied to six of these virtual conferences, and the results revealed that they were just as effective, and indeed often more so, than their in-person peers at encouraging interactions and collaborations. Indeed, while those who eventually formed collaborations were 1.6 times more likely to interact at an in-person conference, they were two times more likely at a virtual conference." So do you think legal technologists are enough like scientists for the data to translate? Read more at REAL KM: Are conferences still worth it?

Passing along the savings
Bob Ambrogi has an interesting story today about a legal tech company launching a service to compete with companies it serves. Mighty, a personal injury tech company, formed Mighty Law, designed to provide lower cost access to PI work. In terms of the why, CEO Joshua Schwadron said, "One of the most profound disappointments of the PI industry is how little injured people have benefitted from innovation over the last, well, 50 years." Bob brings up the specters of other dual-companies, Atrium and Clearspire, but it seems unlike them, "neither entity has any ownership interest in the other." Read more at LawSites: In Bid to Disrupt PI, Legal Tech Company Pivots, Launches Legal Service to Compete with the Very Firms It Has Long Served
