ILTACON Update

There is not a lot of substance coming out of the ILTA annual conference through official channels - mostly just scheduled events and not so subtle advertising of upcoming vendor presentations. But then, keep in mind that day two hasn't started yet and as Bob Ambroji writes in another one of his posts "I am at ILTACON with a packed schedule" so I fully expect writing will come later. Clearly returning the Klik SmartBadge (a Hal9000ish looking thing just missing the red coloring) or being fined $50 is something that needs to be communicated to attendees. Unofficial channels are reporting an annoyingly high level of marketing through the official conference app, and of course the status on all the parties, events and bars. But overwhelmingly what I'm seeing is the reconnecting with friends and colleagues. Oh and let's not forget the ILTA BACONCON t-shirts! Now this inquiring mind wants to know if bacon (the real stuff, not that hokey turkey stuff they've served in the past) is actually being served? Drop me a line with your ILTACON impressions. Curiouser and curiouser!

I think my disclosures as a NetDocs customer are pretty clear, but let me put that out there again, just to be sure. Of course it's Bob Ambrogi who has the first real post out - and even he has said he'll write about iManage AI as time permits, but I am very curious. I mean more than once upon a midnight dreary, I have pondered, weak and weary, where is any mention of RAVN? As I recall, iManage bought RAVN Systems in mid 2017, touting them as "UK-based leading experts in Artificial Intelligence (AI)." I recall reading for a year or more customer complaints about problems with the integration and use of RAVN in the DMS and then frankly, in the intervening years, it just went silent. I had thought I'd hear a "we had it first" marketing argument when NetDocuments announced ndMAX, its AI solution, but there was nothing. Now we've got another iManage AI tool and still no mention of RAVN. Is iManage AI an outgrowth or nextgen version of RAVN? Is it new, a complete rewrite because RAVN was a dud and was cast aside? With apologies to Edgar Allen Poe, I guess I can't "Quoth the Ravn." Read more at LawSites: iManage Announces iManage AI, New AI Powered Search Across Its Platform

Mostly passing on AI, fill out the KM survey!

Rther than highlight another AI story about women potentially being disproportionately impacted by AI,
Beijing Health Commission banning AI-generated prescriptions,
or why you should have AI trust issues, or
yet another post on whether law firms should ban or embrace AI, I'm going a different route. Ok one quick comment on that last post. In my last presentation on AI and the one I have upcoming, here is what I have to say on that subject: "Unless you are willing to invest the time, energy and education required to properly understand how advanced AI works, how it can fail, and how to confirm the answers, avoid AI. Ban it at your firm." INSTEAD of all that, I'm going to try to boost Nick Milton's reach for his global KM survey. I really like Nick's posts. I consider them thoughtful, articulate and valuable (and I know many of you do too). Frankly I'd love to skew his survey results with data from legal. So if you're a pinion working in KM, or a pinion whose firm, department or organization has a KM program (fledgling, mature or in-between), then please take a few minutes out to participate in the survey or pass this link onto someone who can participate. You'll have my thanks and Nicks. Read more at Knoco stories: Please take part in the global KM survey
